A CHAIR IN COMPUTER SCIENCE Department of Computer Science, School of Mathematical & Information Sciences (Vacancy UAC.490) The University of Auckland seeks to appoint a qualified Computer Scientist who has the research and teaching skills to make a significant contribution to its Department of Computer Science. The University, with over 22,000 students, is sited in the heart of New Zealand's largest city. Auckland is the international gateway to New Zealand, the major industrial, commercial and cultural city in the country and offers an exceptional range of lifestyles and recreational activities. Our Department of Computer Science occupied new well-equipped laboratories and offices in 1991 and offers a modern pleasant working environment in which the interests of academic staff are supported well. The department has over 500 equivalent full-time students and is projected to have substantial future growth in graduate student numbers. The new chair holder will be expected to play a leading role in developing advanced teaching and research within the department. The precise conditions of appointment will be subject to negotiation. Conditions of Appointment Qualifications 1. Applications are welcomed from those who believe they are qualified for this challenging position. The successful applicant will be expected to have an accomplished teaching and research record. We are willing to accept applications from candidates from all backgrounds but may favour those in the applied or experimental Computer Science area. Duties 2. The Professor will be responsible to the Vice-Chancellor through the Head of Department of Computer Science, the Director of the School of Mathematical & Information Sciences and Dean of the Faculty of Science for such teaching and related duties, including examining, as may be required by the Head of the Department, and will be expected to encourage, supervise and engage in research within the University. Teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels will be required. 3. Candidates should note that a Professor who holds a Chair within a Department may be asked from time to time to undertake the duties of Acting Head of the Department. All Professors are eligible to serve (and may be required to serve) a term as Head of the Department to which they are appointed notwithstanding that they may have already served one or more such terms. Terms of Appointment to the Chair 4. The appointment will be for an initial period of four years and may be continued thereafter by agreement. 5. Appointments may be terminated, either during the initial term or thereafter, by six months written notice given by either party. 6. If an appointee resigns before completing four years service a proportionate refund of fares and travel allowances provided by the University will be required unless for special reasons, the Vice-Chancellor requires otherwise. Note: Most appointments are continued after the initial term. These provisions are not intended to imply any insecurity of tenure. Procedures to safeguard the appointee in appropriate cases would be observed in the unusual event of termination being proposed. 7. The appointment is a full-time one. However, members of staff may undertake a limited amount of professional work and public service outside the University provided such activities do not interfere with University duties. 8. Academic staff are required to retire at 65 years of age to take effect on the first day of February following their 65th birthday. Salary 9. At present, professorial salaries are established within the range of $NZ80,000 - $NZ100,000 per annum having regard to the qualifications of the candidate concerned. Travel Allowances 10. Approved travel and other removal expenses will be allowed within the limits set out in the attached statement. Research and Study Leave 11. Professors shall be entitled to research and study leave from time to time in accordance with the then current policy and regulations of the University. Note: The taking of such leave is encouraged by the University which normally grants special travel allowances in addition to payment of full salary. Date of Appointment 12. The person appointed will be required to take up duties on a date to be arranged with the Vice-Chancellor and Head of Department of Law. Reservations 13. The University reserves the right to invite specific individuals to apply for vacant positions. 14.
