Dartmouth College Professorships in Computer Science The Department of Computer Science at Dartmouth College invites applications for two positions in computer science. The first position is at the level of Associate or Full Professor. Candidates for this position should have a substantial record of research in a major area of experimental computer science and systems. The second position is also tenure-track, but both the level of the appointment and the area of research are open. However, preference will be given to a junior appointment. The Department of Computer Science currently includes nine regular faculty members, and will have eleven regular members after these appointments. Several faculty members in the Thayer School of Engineering and the Department of Mathematics have research interests related to computer science and participate in the Computer Science Ph.D. program. Research interests in the department include algorithms, multimedia, graphics, visualization techniques, computational geometry, asynchronous concurrent systems, parallel algorithms, parallel file and disk systems, operating systems, design automation, VLSI, robotics, electronic libraries, combinatorial optimization, image processing, and signal processing. The Computer Science Department resides in the newly completed Sudikoff Laboratory for Computer Science. Dartmouth College is a highly selective Ivy League university with approximately 4000 undergraduates and 1000 graduate students. It combines the advantages of a small liberal arts college (small class size, excellent students, and close student-faculty interaction) with the research activities of a university. As an indication of this dual commitment, research and teaching both count strongly in decisions on hiring, promotion, and tenure. Faculty in the department have Sun and DEC workstations in their offices with network connections to other workstations, laser printers, a DECmpp massively parallel computer, several mainframes, and the Internet. A variety of other equipment, including IBM and Silicon Graphics workstations, is also available. A campus-wide Macintosh network serves all students and faculty and is heavily used in undergraduate courses and for campus communication. Laboratories of DEC alphas, DECstations, Silicon Graphics Indys, and other workstations are available for undergraduate and graduate instruction. Persons interested should submit a curriculum vitae and a list of at least four references, at least one of whom can comment on teaching. Review of the applications will begin immediately and will continue until the search is complete. Please send applications materials and general inquiries to Phyllis Bellmore, Computer Science Recruiting, Department of Computer Science, Dartmouth College, 6211 Sudikoff Laboratory, Hanover, NH 03755-3510.
