-------------------------------------------------------------------------- | DIMACS: Center for Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science | | A National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center | -------------------------------------------------------------------------- DIMACS Postdoctoral Fellowship and Visitor Programs We invite applications for visiting and postdoctoral positions at the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (DIMACS). DIMACS is a Science and Technology Center, funded by the NSF, with long-term participation from Rutgers University, Princeton University, AT&T Bell Laboratories, and Bellcore. Research and education activities at DIMACS focus on such areas as analysis of algorithms, combinatorics, complexity, computational algebra, discrete and computational geometry, discrete optimization and graph theory. A primary activity of the center is to sponsor year-long research programs on specific topics of current interest, such as the 1995-96 Special Year on Logic and Algorithms. DIMACS Postdoctoral fellowships go almost exclusively to people who have completed a Ph.D. in Mathematics, Computer Science, or an allied field, within the last three years. These fellowships all provide a $40,000 stipend, plus a $2000 allowance usable for travel, publication costs, and other research-related expenses. Applications for all postdoctoral fellowships must be submitted (see CONTACT INFORMATION below) by Jan. 15, 1995, and will be processed by the appropriate program committee. Visitor positions, for both academics and industrial researchers, may be either long-term (several months to a year) or short-term (a few days or weeks). They are intended for people with full or partial support from outside sources, as DIMACS support for these positions is usually limited to travel and subsistence. We'll reserve a few positions for faculty from nonresearch institutions who wish to spend sabbatical time at DIMACS. Applications from researchers in industry are especially encouraged and will be given special consideration. Would-be visitors for the Special Year or for a specific workshop should apply to the address in CONTACT INFORMATION below; other visitors must arrange for a DIMACS member to act as host and submit an application on your behalf. Selection begins with the applications submitted by January 15, 1995. Late applications will be considered, but should be submitted 6 months in advance and applicants should be aware that on-time applications get the fullest consideration. (To get a list of DIMACS permanent members, see CONTACT INFORMATION below.) PROGRAMS -------- 1. SPECIAL YEAR PROGRAMS Logic and Algorithms; 1995-96 We expect to host a number of postdocs and visitors during the 12 months starting in August 1995. Postdocs are expected to participate in all special year activities, including research seminars, distinguished lecture series, workshops, the Federated Logic Conference, etc., and to pursue research in collaboration with visitors and permanent members of DIMACS. In addition, we plan a series of week-long tutorials, one in each of this year's concentration areas -- computer-aided verification, finite-model theory, and proof complexity -- and we strongly encourage postdocs to attend tutorials both within and outside their own specialties. Postdocs will be chosen primarily on the basis of demonstrated technical excellence within logic and computer science. Recent Ph.D.'s with their own source of funding are also encouraged to apply; several slots will be available for such applicants to participate fully in postdoc life at DIMACS. Visitors are also invited to participate in the various special year activities, including the tutorials (which are intended, among other things, to introduce experienced researchers in one field to another). For information on all planned special year activities, see the CONTACT INFORMATION section below. Mathematical Support for Molecular Biology; 1994-1996 Subject to funding availability, there may be postdoctoral fellowship opportunities in the second year of this special year's activities. Activities may include an intensive exposure to the workings of laboratory biology. This phase will be held at the NSF Science and Technology Center in Molecular Biotechnology at the University of Washington in Seattle, during the summer of 1995 (subject to pending funding) and work with the biologists at the Waksman Institute for Molecular Biology at Rutgers and the Genome Center of the University of Pennsylvania. Selection of postdocs will be based primarily on the basis of demonstrated technical excellence within the mathematical sciences. Consideration will also be given to previous commitment to work within the biological sciences. Applicants should supplement their applications with a statement explaining what s/he hopes to get from participation in the postdoctoral training program and what s/he hopes to bring to such a program ****************************************************** 2. POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWS: Postdoctoral Research Fellows may work on research projects in any area supported by DIMACS, and are encouraged to collaborate with both DIMACS visitors and permanent members. They will be expected to contribute to the research life of the DIMACS center by attending and speaking in research seminars and workshops, organizing seminars, and writing technical reports. Postdoctoral fellows will also be expected to contribute to the educational mission of the center, for example, by writing a detailed survey paper in their area of research, writing expository papers or articles, or coordinating seminars for graduate or undergraduate students. ***************************************************** 3. RESEARCH AND EDUCATION POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS: (Subject to funding availability) This two-year postdoctoral fellowship program aims to start training a new generation of researchers, able and willing to contribute effectively to school and college education. Research and education fellows devote equal time to their own research programs and to mathematics or computer science education (at the elementary, high school, or college level). Research projects may involve any area supported by DIMACS. Fellows will learn about national, state, and local efforts to improve mathematics education, and will participate in specific projects such as development of course materials or software, assessment of classroom practices, or participation in the teacher leadership or young scholar programs at DIMACS. Applicants must have excellent potential for research, give evidence of both experience and interest in education, and demonstrate outstanding communication skills. Applicants will need at least one reference letter specifically addressing qualifications and experience in teaching or other educational activities, as well as a brief statement of their own aims and motivation in becoming involved in education. ********************************************************* 4. UNIVERSITY-INDUSTRY RESEARCH FELLOWS: (Application deadline already passed for 1995-96) This new fellowship program, open to both recent Ph.D.'s and more senior researchers, aims to encourage interaction between the academic and industrial sectors by enabling researchers to divide their time (approximately evenly) between an industrial setting and a university environment. We have begun negotiating with several major companies, and we anticipate several fellowships in the area of Computer-Aided Verification. ******************************************************** APPLICATION PROCEDURES ---------------------- DEADLINES: January 15, 1995 for all fellowship applications except the University-Industry Research Fellowships. Visitors should apply at least six months before the proposed visit.
