The German National Research Center for Computer Science (GMD) offers 10 Postgraduate Positions By these positions, GMD offers young scientists the opportunity to work on innovative topics in a broad range of subjects. The emphasis is on - Communication and Cooperation - Intelligent Multimedia Systems - Hardware/Software Co-Design - Parallel and Scientific Computing which represent the four major research areas of GMD. Each of the full-time positions will have a duration of up to two years. A single extension by one additional year is possible. Funding can commence in April 1995. Applications must be sent before March 1, 1995. Applicants must have a Ph. D. (or equivalent) and demonstrate research experience from projects in research institutions, universities or industry. Good knowledge of English or German is required. A statement of research qualification and interest should accompany the application. The applications should include a Curriculum Vitae, copies of university degrees, letters of reference, and publication lists. Please send applications to GMD Gilbert Kalb Schloss Birlinghoven D-53754 St. Augustin Germany For further information please contact Gilbert Kalb email: kalb@gmd.de Fax: +49 2241 14 2288 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- One of the topics of interest for postgraduates within the above announcement is the area of COMPUTATIONAL METHODS IN CHEMISTRY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY Within GMD, there are research groups directed by Prof. Thomas Lengauer and Prof. Ulrich Trottenberg that work on a wide variety of problems in these application areas. Research topics within these groups include Computer applications in molecular biology: - alignment of DNA, RNA and protein sequences and structures, especially with relation to problems in molecular structure prediction - construction of phylogenetic trees - computer-aided prediction of the three-dimensional structure of proteins - classification of three-dimensional protein structures - prediction of molecular interactions (docking) Computer applications in chemistry: - molecular modeling of solids (crystalline and especially non-crystalline) - development of efficient (especially parallel) algorithms for molecular dynamics computations and Monte-Carlo methods - parallelization of ab-initio methods We seek applicants with substantial algorithmic or computational expertise for such applications, either in discrete or in numerical methods. Furthermore, the applicants should have sufficient experience with and knowledge of the application area.
