     Ph.D. Studentships in Knowledge Representation and Reasoning
   Department of Computer Science, Queen Mary and Westfield College

  Applications are invited from students wishing to pursue research 
leading to a Ph.D. in the area of Knowledge Representation & Reasoning.

  Suitable Ph.D. topics include: nonmonotonic logics (particular
logics, general frameworks, properties of nonmonotonic consequence 
relations, model-based implementation), commonsense causal reasoning 
(using formalisms such as the Situation Calculus, the Event Calculus, 
and nonmonotonic temporal logics), and reasoning about the mental 
states of agents (using non- monotonic and modal logics to represent 
beliefs, desires, intentions, obligations, persistence, commitment and
rationality).

  Candidates should have a good first degree in an appropriate subject,
such as Computer Science or Mathematics. Good graduates in Philosopy 
will also be considered, provided they have an appropriate background 
in formal logic. Normally, candidates are required to have an 
appropriate master's degree, although exceptions are possible.

  Suitably qualified eligible candidates will be nominated for EPSRC,
departmental or college awards. Graduate Teaching Studentships may 
also be available.
