PA EXPO98 Report




                            PRACTICAL APPLICATION  EXPO98 REPORT

                                 *** London 23-27 March 1998***

The Practical Application Company is pleased to announce the success of PA
EXPO98.

The week, attended by over 300 delegates from 28 countries, attracted 181
submitted papers and provided a unique insight into leading-edge
applications, systems, development tools, and techniques, for solving
real-world problems in business, industry, and commerce.

The Practical Application Company will be launching a new event for next
year, PA JAVA99 - The Practical Application of Java.

If you are interested in attending this conference, or submitting a paper,
please let us know by completing the form at the end of this message.  We
would also like to hear from anyone interested in joining the PA Java
programme committee or a recommendation for a possible member.  We would
also appreciate feedback on who you would like to hear speaking at the
conference.



PA EXPO98 this year featured:

PAAM98 - The Practical Application of Intelligent Agents and Multi-Agents
PADD98 - The Practical Application of Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining
PAPPACT98 - The Practical Application of Prolog and Constraint Technology
PAKeM98 - The Practical Application of Knowledge Management

Each event provided a forum for information exchange and included a rich
blend of tutorials, invited talks, refereed papers, panel discussions, a
poster session, social agenda and a full industrial exhibition.

A joint Exhibition was shared by all the exhibitors at PA EXPO, and
provided displays of fielded applications and developments tools from
Amzi!, CompulogNet, Cosytec, IF Computer, ILOG, ISL, Kluwer Academic
Publishers, Living Systems, Logica UK, LPA, Npower, Parallel Application
Centre, Prolog Development Centre, Seimens, Verity.

PAAM is the flagship event  of PA EXPO. Tutorials came from Michael Huhns
(University of South Carolina),  Danny Lange (General Magic), Joerg Mueller
(Zuno Ltd) and David Martin/Adam Cheyer (SRI International).
Keynote addresses were provided by Michael Huhns (University of South
Carolina), Danny Lange, (General Magic), Richard Gaunt (Autonomy Systems
Ltd) and Jeffrey Rosenchein (Hebrew University and AgentSoft Ltd).
There was also a panel discussions on Mobile Agents chaired by Dr Divine
Ndumu of BT Labs.

PADD built on the success of the previous year and continued to
demonstrated how a wealth of opportunities are available through the use of
this technology.
Tutorials came from Paul Stolorz (Jet Propulsion Lab) and Gavin Meggs/Mike
Fagan (BT Laboratories).  Keynote addresses by Nada Lavrac (J. Stefan
Institute), Alan Montgomery(ISL), Ken Ono (Angoss Software), Chris Volinsky
(AT and T) and David Watkins (White Cross Systems).

This year PAP and PACT combined into one conference (PAPPACT), and
continued to be the premier forum for Prolog and constraint applications
and systems.

Tutorials from Helmut Simonis (Cosytec), Jacob Feldman/Didier Vergamini
(ILOG), Michael Covington (The University of Georgia) and a Prolog and the
Web tutorial presented jointly by Amzi!, IF Computer, LPA and Prolog
Development Centre and moderated by Manuel Hermenegildo (Technical
University of Madrid). Keynote addresses from I.V. Ramakrishnan (State
University of New York at Stony Brook), Eric Jacquet-Lagreze
(Euro-Decision), Karen Morrissey (Business Management Systems Corp.),
Stephane N'Dong (PrologIA), Laurent Vieille (Next Century Media) and Erkki
Laitila (Expert System Workshop).

PAKeM was the new event for 1998 in recognition of the emerging level of
interest in Knowledge Management.
Tutorials from Chris Bedell/Robert Taylor (KPMG Management) and Larry
Lucardie (Arthur Andersen).  Keynote addresses from Phillip Webb (DERA),
Rob van der Spek (CIBIT), Roger Williams (Cap Gemini), Richard Gaunt
(Autonomy), Jean-Louis Ermine (The French Atomic Energy Commission) and
Mark Neil (Verity).
